Principles of Caring for Small Plants
Any plant thrives in the conditions in which it naturally grows. For example, cacti thrive in the hot days and cold nights of the desert, bromeliads thrive in the humidity of the rainforest, and ferns thrive in cool, damp environments. Of course, we cannot create exactly the same conditions at home, but if we want to have plants at home, we should try to create similar conditions. Here are 4 principles that should be taken into account when caring for any plant:
- Watering - When it comes to watering houseplants, we must remember that the roots of each plant need air along with water. Therefore, we should not overwater (except for those plants that must have constantly wet soil). The required amount of water and the frequency of watering are determined by the size of the plant, the environment, and the time of year. Water the plant not according to your routine, but according to its needs: more in spring and summer, and less in winter.
- Nutrition (nutrients) - Plants need nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, various trace elements, and minerals to grow. Nitrogen promotes the growth of leaves and stems, phosphorus supports root growth, and potassium encourages flowering and fruiting. Garden plants get nutrients naturally from the soil, while potted plants need to be fed. More fertilizer is needed when growth is slow, leaves turn yellow or pale, and signs of overfeeding include drooping and scorched leaves, white casts, and weak growth in summer.
- Humidity - Most of the plants that we grow at home (except cacti and succulents) originated in tropical regions, naturally in high humidity. Therefore, in winter, when we heat the house, we must take measures to save the plants: move them to a more humid place (kitchen or bathroom), regularly moisten the leaves, and tightly arrange the plants in groups.
- Defoliation - Dust blocks light from entering plant leaf cells and chloroplasts, which can lead to plant death. Therefore, we must keep the leaves clean: use a soft brush, use a water spray, and if possible, place them in an open space in the summer.
